
Why “IP55” Isn’t Enough: The Real Reason We Stress-Test Our Heaters
If you’re putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or on a patio, you’ll see the “IP55” label everywhere. On paper, that’s the gold standard. It means the housing keeps out dust and can handle a few splashes of water. But here’s the thing: a lab rating is just a snapshot in time. It doesn’t tell you if that heater will actually work after two years of steaming showers and freezing winter nights. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating. We put every batch through damp-heat aging tests. It’s basically a torture chamber for heaters.
The battle against steam
Bathrooms are surprisingly brutal. One minute it’s freezing, the next it’s a sauna. This rapid swing creates a vacuum effect—it literally sucks moisture through the gaskets and cable entries. If that dampness hits the lamp terminals or the wiring? You’re looking at corrosion or, worse, a short circuit. To stop that from happening, we push our units to 85% humidity at high temperatures for hundreds of hours. We’re trying to break them. We want to find the exact moment a seal gives up so we can fix it before the heater ever reaches your wall.
Wear and tear
Heat makes things expand. Moisture makes them rust. In these heaters, the spot where the heating element meets the electrical connectors is usually the first place to fail. During our tests, we watch for any degradation in the insulation. If the electricity starts leaking where it shouldn’t, the unit is a safety risk. We check the resistance values before and after the cycle. If the numbers spike? The design is trash. We toss it and go back to the drawing board.
The balancing act
There’s a tricky trade-off here. If we seal the unit too tightly to keep the humidity out, we trap the heat inside. The electronics basically cook themselves in their own skin. It’s a delicate balance. We need enough airflow to keep the internals cool, but enough protection to keep the steam out. Our testing helps us find that sweet spot. The result is a heater that actually lasts—as long as you hang it the way the manual tells you to.
